Script for podcast - Does Medicaid Pay Before or After?

Intro

(game show music, clapping, crowd noise)

Host: Welcome back, ladies and gentleman, to ‘Medicaid Stumpers.’ Our topic: is sequential billing (crowd oohhh), or in other words, when does Medicaid pay in relation to other insurances? Let’s go to our first contestant.

After commercial

Host: You’re ready to submit a claim for your Medicaid patient who also has insurance with ACME Healthcare. Do you submit first to Medicaid or to ACME?

(tick-tock and time up buzzer)

Contestant 1 (hesitant): Uhh…not Medicaid?

Host: That’s right! Because: “Medicaid is the payer of last resort.” (crowd applause)

After Medicare

Host: Contestant two, you get some payment from ACME, and you’re ready to file the rest to Medicaid. But… you check eligibility and find out the patient has Medicare. Do you submit first to Medicaid or Medicare?

(tick-tock and time up buzzer)

Contestant 2 (confident): That’s easy! Not Medicaid.

Host: Exactamundo! Why? Because: “Medicaid is the payer of last resort.”

After Medicare and commercial (if retiree)

Host: All right. Your patient is a retiree. In this case, Medicare pays before group insurance. Does Medicaid do the same? For the jackpot, do you submit first to Medicaid or to the group insurance?

Contestant 3 (which is the crowd): Not Medicaid!!

Host: Right on! Becaauuuse…

Contestant 3 (the crowd): “Medicaid is the payer of last resort.”

Host: That’s all the time we have. You’ve been a great audience!
